Theft from cars in on the increase across Fleet, warn officers from Safer Hart, so don't leave anything on show in your vehicle that may lure a thief…

Things like satellite navigation devices, handbags, laptops, mobile phones, tools etc are all irresistible to your average petty criminal.

And always make sure you lock your car door. Obvious I know, but some people don't.

During the last three months a scheme run by the council and Safer Hart has been targeting what they call 'vulnerable vehicles' (ones with booty on display).

When the patrolling officers see a vulnerable vehicle they take details and then a letter is sent to the owner of the vehicle reminding them about crime prevention.

More than 230 letters have been sent to car owners since the scheme started.

"Simple actions such as locking your car or van even when it's parked on your driveway, and taking valuables into the house with you, reduce the risk of you becoming the victim of an opportunist thief," said Safer Neighbourhoods Inspector, John Halfacre.

Daniel Gill, anti-social behaviour coordinator for Hart, agrees. "It only takes a few seconds for someone to break into a car, even if an alarm is fitted," he added.

Following the success of the scheme so far and the positive public feedback, there are now hopes to continue it on a permanent basis.
