Gig rowing

PENDEEN GIG CLUB:

Pendeen Gig Club will be launching their new GRP training gig

The gig was built by Trevor Deakin, of St Austell, and has been funded mostly by a Grant from the Cornwall Community Foundation section of Sport Relief.

The new gig will be named by Pendeen vicar, Rev Alan Rowell, with other local councillors and sponsors also invited. Following the launch there will be an opportunity for guests to have a row or a ride and a series of fun races to which other local clubs have been invited.

The club has been growing in numbers and success and the new training gig will relieve pressure on the racing gig,

Anyone interested in learning to row is welcome to come along. Should the weather cause problems the launch will be moved to Newlyn Harbour lifeboat slipway.

Novices are always welcome to join the club at Newlyn lifeboat pontoon on Tuesday and Thursdays from 6pm.

Sailing

MOUNT’S BAY SAILING CLUB:

Sun, blue skies and just enough wind to move a boat around on the water were all to order for the club

The most eye-catching event turned out to be the Pursuit Race open to all members and classes.

The Mirrors were first away and Jessica Bodé with dad Rob quickly made the most of her spinnaker to establish an early lead over the other Mirrors in the race.

As they got to the east of the Mount the wind died but a dead run inexplicably turned into a beat for Jessica while the rest floundered behind in the doldrums. Taking a chance on the height of the tide she went with the new flow and stayed perilously closer to the Mount. This proved to be the winning move as she established a lead over the rest of the whole fleet until the end. Other races followed to allow the club’s trainees a chance to show what they had learned and this fun filled day ended with a barbecue on the club terrace.

Tuesday August 3:

Eight Mirrors, two Ospreys, several Handicap boats and eight Lasers sailed in a northwesterly Force 3.

In the Lasers, John Woolcock and Jeremy Williams got off the start-line well. With Jeremy breathing down his neck for the whole race John kept his cool and crossed the line first to take the honours. With Graham Cousins in third it was all about the battle for fourth. Nick Stoten, Greg Harris and Dave Johnson each took their turn but it was Gemma Woolcock who sailed brilliantly from the back to take fourth position, followed by Greg, Dave and Nick. Ben Wilkinson followed in his smaller Radial rig.

In the Mirror fleet, Beth White and Izzy Howells back for the first time time in over a year had not lost any of their skills and in spite of a battle with Simon Chapman and Amy George, came in a definite first. Meanwhile, back in the bunch, on a night when the normally hard racing Mark and Stan Prichard couldn’t quite hold on in their usual manner, Tony Clee in spite of training a novice crew, Damon Hopkins, found enough acceleration to sneak away from the group and claim third.

Friday August 6:

With a good west-south-Westerly F3 blowing the fleet was treated to a rare beat start from the pierhead.

In the Lasers after the inevitable scuffle on the start-line it was John Currie first to the windward mark just ahead of John Woolcock, and so it remained for the entire race. Greg Harris secured third ahead of John Harvey whorecovered from the back of the fleet to finish fourth. Gemma finished ahead of Dave Johnson and Nick Stoten retired after unwittingly attaching himself rather spectacularly to an RS 700.

In the Mirror fleet, as soon as the fleet crossed the line the winds eased and it was Simon and Amy who were quickest to react and adjust accordingly, easing away from the chasers and never looking in any danger of being caught. Tony Clee and Harriet Hopkins come second while Jessica Bodé, sailing with new crew Sally Garbutt, returning to the Mirrors for the first time in many years, in third.

Sunday August 8:

On a perfect morning, a light north westerly saw Lasers, Mirrors, Ospreys and Mirrors race to warm up in club racing before the club’s Summer Sailing Day activities.

In the Lasers, Gemma Woolcock hot off the line and the first to reach the leeward mark just ahead of brother John. John found himself clear at the first windward mark and went on to take the honours. Paul Broomfield was going well but it was Greg Harris who took second place. Jeremy Williams took the remaining podium position with Paul settling for fourth. Gemma was fifth, ahead of Nick Stoten, Bruce Adams and Clive Goodhead.

In the Mirrors class was truly the word as far as Simon and Amy were concerned. In contrast, the race for second was full of twists and turns. Jessica sailed well with Chloe George, making good use of her spinnaker was set to come in a clear second after Simon on the last leg of the last lap when she suddenly became becalmed, while Wendy and Tony with Harriet stayed in clear wind to come in almost simultaneously second and third.

Results:

Tuesday August 3: Mirrors: 1, Beth White/Izzy Howells; 2, Simon Chapman/Amy George; 3, Tony Clee/Damon Hopkins. Lasers: 1, John Woolcock, 2, Jeremy Williams; 3, Graham Cousins.

Friday August 6: Race 1: Mirrors: 1, Simon Chapman/Amy George; 2, Tony Clee/Harriet Hopkins; 3, Jessica Bodé/Sally Garbutt. Lasers: 1, John Currie; 2, John Woolcock; 3, Greg Harris.

Sunday August 8: Mirrors: 1, Simon Chapman/Amy George; 2, Tony Clee/Harriet Hopkins; 3, Wendy Nancholas (S/H). Lasers: 1, John Woolcock; 2, Greg Harris; 3, Jeremy Williams.

PENZANCE SAILING CLUB:

Monday August 2:

A dozen handicap boats gently felt their way around the course in light airs,

The planning classes, Lark’s and contender struggled to stay with Enterprise boats though David and Sam Beamish (RS200), Ben and Marcus Wilkinson (Omega) and Ben Deighton (420) kept up with the leaders on four laps of a short course. With smooth roll tacking of Jeremy Stephens and Clare Knee they were able to cover Rebecca Knee and Jeremy Williams enough to secure the gun. But Ben Deighton held on to second spot as the night breeze helped the boats home. Five Mirrors managed three laps, Eric Taylor and Georgie Bond held off Mary Hallard and Vicky Howard, with Robert James losing out to Suzanna Kent for third. Nine Lasers managed four laps. Young Ben Whitby couldn’t get the better of Peter Henshaw while Alison Green appeared to be pulling away from Neil Ruffell and John Lees. On the third lap Alison missed a wind shift and could not recover to catch Neil and John.

Thursday August 5:

Jeremy Stephens and Clare Knee showed their class in light airs winning on the water, but they should have been at the Enterprise National Championships, being held this week in Scotland. Injury has prevented Jeremy, third last year, from attending and producing a creditable title challenge. Behind them four Larks gave Jeremy Williams and Rebecca Knee (Enterprise) a closer contest. Laura Mitchell and Felicity Chadwick, fresh from the Lark National Championships, came third with Ryan Crawford and Tom Kliskey fourth. All ten boats finished in fading winds and the last leg from Cressars into the railway station marks became a test of nerves as the windshifts threatened to upstage the early leaders. In the Lasers Peter Henshaw made sure of first, with young Ben Whitby second on the second lap, which he held from Derek Jones. Though Eric Taylor and Grace Wilkins clocked up another win, in the mirror class, they had to pass Suzannah Kent, Mark Chadwick and Ezra Sheridan on the second lap after overcoming some tactical covering. Reece Curnow, 14-year-old grandson of Ralph, one of the senior sailors, made his Mirror racing debut crewing with Harry Chadwick and finishing in forth.

Results:

Monday August 2: Mirrors: 1, Eric Taylor & Georgie Bond; 2, Mary Hallard & Vicky Howard; 3, Suzanna Kent. Handicap: 1, Jeremy Stephens & Clare Knee; 2, Ben Deighton; 3, Rebecca Knee & Jeremy Williams. Lasers: 1, Neil Ruffell; 2, John Lees; 3, Alison Green.

Thursday August 5: Mirrors: 1, Eric Taylor & Grace Wilkins; 2, Suzannah Kent; 3, Mark Chadwick & Ezra Sheridan. Handicap: 1, Jeremy Stephens & Clare Knee; 2, Rebecca Knee & Jeremy Williams; 3, Laura Mitchell & Felicity Chadwick. Lasers: 1, Peter Henshaw; 2, Ben Whitby; 3, Derek Jones.

ST IVES SAILING CLUB:

Wednesday August 4:

Simon Ashmore (OOD) and Rick Harris were on hand to organise racing for eight dinghies in strong breezes from the northwest, accompanied by considerable swell,

Caroline Royal was crewing for Marcus Millington (Osprey) for the first time. Terrie Cook, Paul Tarplee and Dave Peters laid out the course from the safety boat, starting with a short reach set in the direction of Godrevy. John Palser and Mark Russell (Lasers) set off early and had to turn back as Mike Cook (Laser) moved off the line in the lead, which he carried onto the run, moving south before turning onto the windward leg to the start/finish. Marcus and Caroline moved to the front before the end of the lap with Mike maintaining second as several Lasers (Mark, Fion Tarplee and Paul Gray) battled with the Lark (Simon Burgess with Cian Spowart) for third place. Attrition played its part, with several dinghies affected by capsizing or gear problems, but after his bad start, Mark Russell finished in second place on handicap, in only his third race in the Laser.

Saturday August 7:

Race 1: Marcus Millington and Paul Tarplee were in the safety boat to lay a triangular course with instructions by Daniel Rouncefield (OOD), Barry Dain and Edward Jenkyn in the pierhead, as 12 dinghies took to the water. Jon Keast and Alex Accleton (RS800) moved away from the start to lead, in moderate breezes from the west and made their way down to the leeward mark towards Carbis Bay. John Palser was the first of four Laser helms to gybe onto the reach moving north before turning onto the windward leg west to the start/finish, but Mike Cook and Paul Gray were never far away and this remained the case for the first three laps. On the fourth lap Mike had a coming together with Simon Ashmore and Marc Paxton in their Stratos at the leeward mark. At the same time, the Stratos hit the mark and both boats lost places as they executed their penalty turns. Brian Gray (Laser) had a good final lap and tacked ahead of Gray Junior as they approached the finish line.

● Race 2: The course was reversed for the second race and Paul Gray (Laser) had an excellent start. Moving north on a windward fetch, he then eased his mainsheet for the run south east before turning towards the west, windward to the start/finish. Jon Keast and Alex Accleton (RS800) also had a good start in search of another big lead to offset their fast boat’s heavy handicap. Paul Gray continued to be the best of the rest for two laps but mistakes at the windward mark and poor transition onto the run allowed John Palser (Laser) and then Mike Cook (Laser) to get past. Mike continued to pressurise John over the remaining laps and Brian Gray (Laser) began to find better form as the wind speeds started to moderate. A late surge on the final lap beat took Brian past Mike and close to John’s stern as they approached the finish line.

Results:

Wednesday: 1, Mike Cook (Laser); 2, Mark Russell (Laser); 3, Simon Burgess and Cian Spowart (Lark); 4, Marcus Millington and Tim Royal (Osprey); 5, Fion Tarplee (Laser); 6, Paul Gray (Laser); 7, Martin Rawling (RS100); 8, John Palser (Laser).

Saturday:

Race 1: 1, Jon Keast and Alex Accleton (RS800); 2, John Palser (Laser); 3, Brian Gray (Laser); 4, Paul Gray (Laser); 5, Simon Ashmore and Marc Paxton (Stratos); 6, Mike Cook (Laser); 7, Dave Hill and Brian Hughes (Magno); 8, Dave Harris (Pico); Martin Potter and friends – Hamish and Dawn Patterson (RS400) DNF; Stephanie Eddy and friend (Pico) fun sail; Martin Coldwell (Topaz) visitor - fun sail; Nigel and Jackie Berridge (Magno) fun sail.

Race 2: 1, Jon Keast and Alex Accleton (RS800); 2nd John Palser (Laser); 3, Brian Gray (Laser); 4, Mike Cook (Laser); 5, Paul Gray (Laser); Nigel and Jackie Berridge (Magno) DNF; Marc Paxton and Simon Ashmore (Stratos) DNF.
